May I travel on the Intercity Direct?

1. Can I use the Intercity Direct with Gaiyo?

Yes, you can. However, surcharge rules apply to certain routes.

2. When is a surcharge mandatory?

For the route Schiphol – Rotterdam (and vice versa), you need an Intercity Direct surcharge.

Surcharge-free travel

  • Amsterdam – Schiphol
  • Rotterdam – Breda

You can travel on these routes without paying a surcharge.

3. How do I purchase the surcharge?

Option 1 – Surcharge kiosk on the platform

  • There is a surcharge kiosk on the Intercity Direct departure platform.
  • Hold your Gaiyo card in front of the card reader to activate the supplement for a single journey.
  • The supplement will be linked directly to your journey.

Option 2 – Via the Gaiyo App (e-ticket)

  • Open the Gaiyo App.
  • Purchase a train ticket for the route you wish to travel.
  • If this journey is with the Intercity Direct, the Intercity Direct surcharge will be added.
  • You will then be traveling with a valid ticket and surcharge, directly from your phone.

4. Do I need to do anything at the surcharge machine after my journey?

No, you don’t need to do anything at the surcharge machine after arrival.

However, as always, you must check out at the NS gates or posts.

5. How does it work for a return trip?

  • For a return trip with the Intercity Direct, you must purchase another supplement (via the supplement kiosk or as an e-ticket in the app).
  • Each trip between Schiphol and Rotterdam (outbound or return) requires a separate supplement.

In short: you can use the Intercity Direct with your Gaiyo card or an e-ticket. A supplement is always required for the Schiphol – Rotterdam route, which you can either activate at the supplement kiosk or purchase as an e-ticket in the Gaiyo App.
